Manual Handling Champions Course
Delivered for North Northamptionshire Council in 2026
Case Study written by Gareth Milner, Osteopathic Solutions UK & Ireland Ltd Director, Bachelor of Science Osteopath, Author of Sorry! We're Closed and Host of The Pain Free Podcast
Firstly I will make it crystal clear what our Manual Handling Champions Course is all about. Instead of bringing us in to qualify your in-house Manual Handling Instructors and Risk Assessors, our Manual Handling Champions Course gives Health and Safety Professionals the knowledge and skill base to qualify your own in-house Manual Handling Instructors and Risk Assessors YOURSELVES!
To the left are the Learning Outcomes and Course Outline which you can download below.
The Champions Course enables Health and Safety Professionals NEBOSH and/ or IOSH qualified, to run a 2 Day Course for up to 6 attendees, training the attendees in basic human anatomy and biomechanics; hazardous Manual Handling postures, techniques and practices; Optimal Manual Handling techniques .. those that minimise musculoskeletal strain .. and maximise musculoskeletal power; how to perform a basic Manual Handling Risk Assessment using the HSE's Manual Handling Checklists as well as an awareness of the MAC Tool and RAPP Tool; and ultimately how to package this knowledge to deliver short Manual Handling Practical Skills Courses in the employees' working environments.

For Health, Safety & Wellbeing Advisor Heidi Irwin based at North Northamptonshire Council, our Manual Handling Champions Course was exactly what her Team were looking for.

In July 2026, our Senior Consultant Instructor and Occupational Osteopath Jon Simmonds ran our Champions Programme at their Trafalgar House, Wellingborough site; that houses local municipal operations, waste services, and highway support teams.

As the Team were training diverse departments, a wide range of inanimate loads were incorporated into the practical sessions with a focus on loads and tasks in Refuse, Recycling, Street Cleaning, Parks and Open Spaces, and Highways. Further down this Case Study we will discuss the handling of these loads by the attendees with regards to any errors they were making as shown in the photo gallery above. The Team would have a key role to support the Council to target-zero workforce musculoskeletal disorders, so our Instructor Jon Simmonds made sure that all attendees were fully competent in all practical handling techniques .. all underpinned by his expertise in biomechanics, as a Degree qualified and practising Osteopath.
Since I founded Osteopathic Solutions UK & Ireland Ltd in 2010 ... as of 2026, over 110 Councils .. County .. District .. Borough .. and City .. have benefitted from our expertise in Manual Handling of Inanimate Loads as well as Moving & Handling of People.

You may be wondering how this has been achieved?

Firstly, we deliver national coverage with a Team from Scotland to the South Coast. Secondly affordable costings .. whether it's our Council Services Manual Handling Training Video at only £95 .. or qualifying a Manual Handling Instructor from only £224 .. or having all the secrets of preventing Manual Handling Injuries and Workplace Musculoskeletal Disorders for only £19.99 with my Book Sorry! We're Closed (I am pictured with a patient in the Osteopathy Clinic to the left) .. making our provision affordable for Clients has ALWAYS been an essential for Osteopathic Solutions. And last but not least it's that consistency of Team and quality management that has supported over 110 Councils. As of 2026, our Head Instructor Jon Simmonds has been part of the Team for 11 years, with all our team historically staying with us on average 7 years.

Very different compared to a bog-standard Manual Handling Train The Trainer 99% of Manual Handling Training providers deliver in the UK, our Champions Course is for Health & Safety Professionals with a passion for this subject .. a passion to prevent ALL types of accidents at work. As you can see from the below gallery, the Course is giving the knowledge and competency to perform Optimal Handling Techniques themselves and teach it to others, so that ''the others'' can teach it to your Workforce, with no errors, no chinese whispers or loss in knowledge efficiency.

A key part of our Champions Course is giving the attendees the template to effectively assess their attendees (in their 2 Day Courses that they will be delivering). Included in the Champions Course package is our product DigiTrain® (shown below). So for example, your Team's Champions Course could be months before the first Instructor and Risk Assessor Course delivery. As you well know, if you don't use it .. you lose it. So newly qualified Manual Handling Champions can simply plug the DigiTrain® USB in, read the DigiTrain® A4 book, watch the Videos, view the Presentations, read the PDF documents and they will be fully reminded exactly how to deliver a remarkable in-house Train The Trainer .. not bog-standard .. REMARKABLE.

The below grid is the marking criteria for a Full-Squat Lift which we define as lifting an inanimate load with grip coupling at floor to mid lower leg level (mid-tibia bone). With the DigiTrain® USB content (that all Champions Course attendees receive), there is the Practical Assessment which includes assessment of a Semi-Squat Lift and Lower; a Full-Squat Lift and Lower; a Lunge Lift and Lower; Hazardous and Safer Carrying; Pushing and Pulling; a Team Lift, Carry, and Team Lower.

To the left Poniso is performing a Full-Squat Lift. Our Occupational Osteopaths, for squat technique, teach the base of support as slightly wider than shoulder width apart, with the feet level (i.e. no foot is in front of the other). Poniso has taken our 'wide stance' too literally, with his feet too wide apart. This will create strain in the pelvic joints, the hips, knees and ankles. With this he would be marked down regarding Feet Position - distance apart. Jon Simmonds gave constructive feedback informing why this is too wide of a foot position making sure Poniso understood why and making sure he performed it correctly after this, throughout the Course.

Before the 3 Day Champions Course was delivered, a lot of ground work was done by myself, by phone and email, with North Northamptonshire Council's Health, Safety & Wellbeing Advisor Heidi Irwin (pictured below right). Heidi had many questions about what resulted from the Course, and no time was scrimped by me to support Heidi in fully understanding the investment her and her Health & Safety Manager were conducting.
